check the name of your resume file

check the name of your resume file check the name of your resume file This is a small thing, but if youre sending out a resume with a date like resume2013, please go update it right now. Otherwise, fairly soon youll start looking like your job search has been a lengthy one (which, rightly or wrongly, can turn some employers off) and like youre not paying attention to details. And while youre at it, make sure your resume isnt named something like Resume with Janes edits. Thats too much insider information, like leaving Track Changes on when you send it.Aside from these things, though, no one will care what your resume file is called, so feel free to ignore all advice to the contrary.

Help! I applied everywhere with not 1 call back!

Help I applied everywhere with bedrngnis 1 call backHelp I applied everywhere with not 1 call backThis ones a real head-scratcher you look online, find jobs that you know good and well you could do with your eyes closed, meet all the stated qualifications, send off your resume electronically, and thenthe silence is deafening. So, why does this happen time and again?I know I know You were told by more than 1 person somewhere along the line that, its just a numbers game. Hmmm, job search is about numbers (just not the ones you were thinking of), but its most definitely not a game. Lets talk about 3 reasons why youre not getting the calls back you think you should.1) You submit your resume for 8 or 10 different job titles because you figure you can adapt to practically anything. What doesnt work in job search is to approach things with a perspective that youre a jack of all trades. The employer is a) not going to spend the time to figure out what to do with you and b) is only hiring some one for ONE job. When you spread yourself thin, you make yourself good to exactly no one.Focus. Focus. Focus. It may seem like if you dont apply for opportunities X and Y and Z that youll miss out. You will. But that job was not perfect for you, and you were not perfect for it. The most successful candidates identify what they want, then go for that and ONLY that, until they get it.2) Youre highly motivated, and dedicated, and passionate. Thats nice, but none of those words indicate what you actually DO. The employer is hiring someone to DO something, not BE something. Another way to think of it is the employer is paying you for something, and its not just to be highly motivated. The something you bring to the table needs to be an action, such as providing operational leadership, directing marketing campaigns, or leading sales teams. Those are your true skills, and more importantly, those are the types of hard-core keywords the employers and recruiters are searching for.3) Youre listi ng your history practically back to the days of the Biblical Flood. I just had a conversation with a candidate who was talking about how he had a natural love for technology that started when he was a child. While that may have been true, thats not a story to present on your resume, LinkedIn, or in an interview.Going too far back in time, rather than highlighting the vast experience you bring to the table, actually has the opposite effect because it reminds your audience that you are old which brings with it an entirely different set of issues. If you have a long history, heres what to do detail the most recent 10-20 years, then summarize your early career without presenting the dates. This will go a long way to emphasizing whats most important, while rounding out the foundation of your career.

4 ways to rise at work if you didnt grow up with a lot of money

4 ways to rise at work if you didnt grow up with a lot of money4 ways to rise at work if you didnt grow up with a lot of moneyRising through the corporate ranks isnt always easy, but there can bean additional set of challenges if you grew up in a poor- or working-class household and have to learn social codes as well as your job.A Harvard Business Review article byNicole Stephens and Sarah Townsend published this week shed light on how working class and middle and upper class people think of themselves. The upshot they are less individualist than those from privileged backgrounds.Instead, people who grew up without a lot of money tend to see themselves as part of a community, no matter where they are. The authors citedresearchsaying that people of lower income tend to consider themselves interdependent with and highly connected toothers. They write that parents in these householdsteach their children the importance of following the rules and adjusting to the needs of others, in part b ecause there is no economic safety net to fall back on.Translation mora money equals a developed sense of individualism, because a financial safety net can often replace a menschenwrdig one. But having less money, while its hard, can give people a better understanding of human dynamics. This also relates to finding success at in the office if you come from humble beginnings There are ways to bridge the gap.The roles of social fit and cultural capitalYou dont know about what you havent been exposed to, as shown in the Harvard Business Review article.Even after students graduate from college and transition to professional workplaces, employees from working-class backgrounds report feeling a lack of social fit and cultural capital, compared with their peers. A student at a top business school, reflecting on her experience in a professional workplace, told us It was kind of a shock to me to be in a workplace and feel very much like Im in this very elite environment where I just dont fit in. I was much more aware of how I talked, how I presented myself, what I wore, what kind of family experiences I chose to share, all those things, Stephens and Townsend wrote.Full rides dont solve all problemsGetting a coveted full ride to one of the most prestigious institutions doesnt make hardships evaporate for lower-income students.Nick Anderson wrote about the reality of full rides to Ivy league schools in a 2016 Washington Post article, focusing on Columbia University in New York City. While students with scholarships may have tuition taken care of, they still have to watch living expenses carefully, which cuts them out of a lot of social events and outings.Anderson described just how stressful that scarcity of ready cash can be, to the extent of crowd-sourcing meals. Here at Columbia University, money pressures lead many to cut corners on textbook purchases and skip city excursions routine for affluent classmates. Some borrow thousands of dollars a year to pay bills. Some fe el obliged to send money home occasionally to help their families. Others spend less on university meal plans, slipping extra food into their backpacks when they leave a dining hall and hunting for free grub through a Facebook network called CU Meal Share.Building social and cultural capital in a new economic groupHeres how to continue to learn and develop within more privileged economic surroundings, even after youve scored a job you never would have dreamed of when you were growing up.1. The earlier, the betterDont be afraid to start getting out of your comfort zone as soon as you can.A 2011 research article in Research in Higher Education touched on the importance of learning the social codes of new environments as early as possible. Habituation goes a long way.Ones habitus sets parameters around that which is imaginable students cannot aspire to a profession that they have not heard about. Still, early interventions and educational experiences can prepare the soil for an infusio n of cultural and social capital that is important for individual mobility. That doesnt mean youve lost your chance if youre already out of college. You can still seize opportunities to learn if youre already working.2. Take free, online courses to build up common skillsYou already graduated with a degree, but consider spending some of your time taking classes for free, even if that means working late at night or on the weekend, on top of yourside hustle. It makes it easier to learn without the social stress of comparisons to classmates, and extra skills will put you on the playing field with colleagues who had ample training in the byways of business before they got to the same office.MOOCs are Massive, Open Online Courses. The website edX offers courses though schools like MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Boston University and Georgetown University. Classes like Berkeleys Academic and Business Writingstart soon, while Cornells Structuring Business Agreements for Success starts today. If forei gn languages are the barrier to rising in the organization, there are many ways to learn outside expensive courses. One of our favorites learn Spanish, French, Russian, Italian through the Duolingo website or download it on Apples App storeor Google Playto study up for free. The truth is that rising in the world from a lower-income background is going to be harder. Theres nothing wrong with putting in extra work outside of the office if it gets you where you want to be.3. Listen up during your commuteTo free podcasts, that is.Listening to experts engaging conversations about current events, pop culture and everything in between is a great way to learn something new, not to mention a way to guarantee that youll be able to chime in at your next dinner party and to fasson a common bond with people from other backgrounds. Having a common frame of reference is a great way to feel like less of an outsider.Check out NPRs selection of podcasts on news, business, pop culture, the environment and more. Or scan Apples podcasts. Call Your Girlfriend, hosted by Ann Friedman, is a great option for women looking for career and life advice, and Death Sex and Money hosted by Anna Sale is a great conversational ride that shows how to connect well to people. APMs Dinner Party Download is a great way to keep up on whats happening in arts and culture. The New York Times The Daily podcast is one of our favorites as well, for its smart, concise discussions of daily news events. You can also listen audio books on your ride to work usingAudible.4. Network, network, networkWho you know will always be important, so seek out ways to get to know people working in a field that excites you. People of all backgrounds can make great connections, because what makes a great professional network is the ability to connect with others - and thats possible regardless of where you came from. In fact, different living experiences are actually an advantage in networking, because our differences are wha t make us interesting.Another advantage those from lower-income backgrounds rely on community and are open to collaboration, which makes understanding people easier. We like Kelly Hoeys Build Your Dream Network as a good primer on how to form good connections that will always be ready with advice or a good job recommendation. (The key reciprocity. Be there for people who want to be there for you.)Heather R. Huhman, founder and president of content marketing and digital PR consultancy Come Recommended, wrote about how who you know can help you grow in a 2014 Business Insider article.Personal and professional growth is crucial to a successful career. Similar to the guidance and support provided by a portion of your network, some of your contacts might also be beneficial in helping your reach new heights within your career, whether its pushing you to apply for a position you initially felt was out of your realm or simply inspiring you to work harder on a daily basis, Huhman wrote.Even i f you didnt grow up in a household with a lot of money, there are ways to fill in the gaps and continue to educate yourself after youre already employed.

How to Stand out in a noisy world

How to Stand out in a noisy worldHow to Stand out in a noisy worldWe are here to laugh at the odds and live our lives so well that Death will tremble to take us.Its a line only Charles Bukowski could have written. To some, he was a cult-hero. To others, he was a prime example of a low-life. In either case, the man made an impression. An author, a pessimist, an alcoholic, and a poet. Bukowskis work has outlived him by decades. Few have captured the struggle of life with the complex simplicity that he did. What he said was always easy, but it came with a depth that somehow illuminated the hidden dimensions of reality. It peeled back layers that you wouldnt otherwise have known existed. He wasnt concerned with anything beyond what he was, and he didnt need you to agree with him. His art was simply about what he had seen through his own eyes and what he put down on a piece of paper. His pain and his laughter. Nothing more, leidhing less.Despite his blatant mistreatment of the opposite sex a nd his questionable lifestyle, Bukowski often gets somewhat of a free pass. Likely in part because of his skill as an artist, but arguably as much, too, because of his awareness of himself his refreshing authenticity. He knew who he was, he didnt mold to outside expectations, and he wore his flaws openly. From a point of material success or happiness, his life isnt one you want to emulate, but his insistence on being himself and using that to his advantage is a quality worth borrowing.Mind Your Own BusinessThe influence of society is powerful. The collective forces, made up of the individual behaviors and perceptions of billions of people, constantly try to guide us in one direction or another. We might have preferences and ideals of our own, but this kind of pressure can sometimes make it hard for us to distinguish between our own voice and the direction of the larger world. Its quite easy to get caught up doing things you dont want or acting in ways that dont cater to your personality . Going against the grain is a battle, and its not an easy one to win.As a result, we often tend to make compromises in our natural, comfortable behavior so that we can give these social forces what they want in hopes of a reward. We start running our businesses like everyone else, and we make our art a little more commercial to blend in.In the short-term, this may work here and there, but over time, its a strategy likely to fail. The ironic reality is that the best way to be seen is by minding your own business. Its by spending time cultivating energy in yourself so that you become so interesting in your own way that it not only stands out, but its impossible to ignore. Thats what creates the difference. On the surface, there was nothing fascinating about Bukowskis life. It took him decades to get noticed. But by the time he did, hed developed such a relatable voice that it was precisely the work he had put into this distinction that enabled him to write books that sell even today. As king for attention doesnt work. Attention has to be provoked, and you have to earn it.Dont mold yourself to what society appears to reward. Its not only ineffective, but it also takes time, effort, and value away from working on yourself. Thats where the magic happens.Authenticity Has a RewardA major reason that many of us let the noise of the world dampen our own voice is that we presume there is a disincentive for going against the grain or challenging the status quo.In small, homogeneous groups, there can be. In the broader world, the effect is the opposite. When you hold a belief about something, youre always going to set yourself up for the possibility of critique and disagreement. The difference is that if youre authentic, and not unnecessarily combative or self-assured, most reasonable people will appreciate that. Its a basic act of decency. We increasingly live in cultures where people identify more often as being against something than they do as being for something. Its the root cause of the vast polarization in our world today, and a change of pace is refreshing for many of us.If your way of living is different from the herd, embrace it and own it. Much of the time, its not about what it is, but its about how you wear it. Standing up for something without needlessly stepping on toes shows confidence and honesty. Its a kind of authenticity that people buy into.Bukowski wasnt a charming guy, but he knew that. Along with the harshness of his thoughts, every page he wrote also contained a dose of vulnerability. He was stripped bare, whether you liked it or not. That influenced how the world saw him, in spite of his faults. On one end, we all know this. That said, the idea that authenticity is a competitive advantage is unintuitive enough that it doesnt fully register when we are surrounded by a reality that is so intent on how telling us what the rules are and how important it is to abide by them. The best way to stand out in a noisy world is to own who you are with grace. All You Need to KnowCharles Bukowski might not be an exemplary role model, but his raw authenticity is an example we can all take something from. Its a reminder that the voice inside of us matters and that its worth fighting to uncover in a world that tries very hard to keep it covered.Over time, we grow, and we readjust. The external reality plays a part in that transformation, and its not always a bad thing. Its an evolution more than it is an unwelcome change. That said, we all have characteristics about us that reflect beliefs about our place in the world, and unless these evolve in a beneficial way, theyre worth holding on to tightly.Rather than worrying about what external influences expect of you, focus on yourself. Cultivate your life in a way that excites you, and be so interesting you cant be ignored.People dont respond negatively as much to what you do, but rather to how you own it. If you stand for something with awareness and without aggressively putting down something else, the world sees qualities that it likes, and thats something it tends to reward in the long run.Standing out for the sake of standing out is generally undesirable. At the same time, we live in a busy and crowded world, and being able to show visibility is something that pays dividends whether it be in your personal life or in your work environments.Luckily, if you do it right, you dont have to compromise yourself to be seen.Want to think and live smarter? Government scraps cap on self-education expenses

Government scraps cap on self-education expenses Government scraps cap on self-education expensesPosted November 8, 2013, by Josie Chun Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey has confirmed that the government will not proceed with the cap on tax deductions for self-education expenses, as proposed by the former Labor government. This is good news all around for individuals pursuing professional development for their employers and for the greater economy, as general productivity increases as workers skills and education increase. The proposed cap, widely opposed by industry and dubbed a tax on learning when it was first mooted, would have had a significant negative impact on individuals professional development initiatives and discouraged attempts to boost skills and training. General Practice Registrars of Australia chief executive Amit Vohra has said in a statement The $2000 cap on self-education expenses was an ill-conceived and hastily put together tax on learning that had broader impl ications for Australias productivity. With the Australian Workforce Productivity Agency finding that every extra dollar invested in tertiary education expands the economy by $26, any cap on education expenses would have spelled bad news for Australias economic growth. It also would have further dampened Australias chances of meeting its target of having 40 per cent of 25 to 34 year olds attain a bachelor degree or higher by 2025. If Australia is to be an innovative, technology-based knowledge economy that continues to thrive and grow and compete on the international stage, continuous learning is essential. As Peter Anderson, chief executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, says, We need to encourage people to boost their skills and become more productive in the workplace, and the tax ordnungsprinzip must play its part in that task. Tax deductibility creates an appropriate shared responsibility, as the outcome supports individuals as well as the economy and broad er education policy. What do you think of the governments decision to scrap the cap? Leave a comment and let us know.
